Prompt: Bizarre Family Tradition

Word Limit: 300 words

This was the deciding moment, if Zachary failed this there was no way Pop would give his blessings. Billy’s teeth chattered, eyes wide with anticipation as they watched Zachary with baited breath.

Pop’s gaze was also trained on Zachary, his eyebrows furrowed as he watched the scrawny lad. If the boy couldn’t pass then there was no way he would ever be fit for Billy, no chance he could be a member of this family.

Ma wasn’t watching, too squeamish to watch. She liked Zachary, thought he was an outstanding young chap and a good match for Billy. However Ma also knew that Zachary had to pass this if he ever wanted to fit in and be part of the family.

A bead of sweat ran down Zachary’s forehead, when Billy had said this would be challenging he had no idea it would be this hard. His thoughts had to be completely focused on the screen in front on him, his mind on the music.

As the music began to stop everyone’s eyes were trained on Zachary as he finished off the routine. Cousin Nora let out a shrill squeal, Billy jumped up and cheered and Pop nodded in acceptance. With the cheering Ma came out of the kitchen to clap.

“I did it.” Zachary could hardly believe it, he had pulled it off- he had danced the Hare Hare Yukai.

“Welcome to the family Zachary, now your truly one of us.”

“I can’t believe you all do this routine together for every holiday.”

“It’s a lot of work but it’s what brings us all together. And now you can perform it with us.”
