Prompt: Werewolves on a road trip
Word Limit: 500 words
Mica was propping open the van’s hood with a stick, trying to figure out what was wrong with the car’s engine. Monica was rolling her eyes at him and grumbling about radiators and other junk. Sid and Harley were complaining about the heat, and how it was all one or the other’s fault. John had stamped off into the forest in a huff and Judy was reading a book. To anyone passing by it would have seemed like an ordinary group of twenty somethings on a road trip, but this was no ordinary group of people.
In the forest John was hunting, he could smell the fear of tiny, delicious rabbits. His eyes were keenly honed on the ever so small tracks that his prey had left, and as he drew closer he could hear the thumping of their hearts. Quickly and precisely he lunged into the rabbit hole and grasped one of his quarry by the foot in his jaws, with that he withdrew from the hole and padded back towards the rode.
Back at the van Mica stopped looking at the engine when he heard the rustle of leaves from the forest. He turned to see a wolf emerging from the trees…
“John, where the hell have you been?”
Slowly the wolf changed form, turning into a man- rabbit still clutched in teeth.
John removed the rabbit from his mouth and quickly cracked its neck, then wiped the small traces of blood from his mouth.
“Well I figured with the van broken down I might as well go for a little hunt.”
Monica turned to him and rolled her eyes, “And if we’d fixed the van and left while you were gone? What would you have done then?”
“Sheesh Monica relax, Mica’s hopeless with cars no way you would have been able to leave without me. But hey if you had I know where the next stop is, I would have hitchhiked there and met up with you.”
“Hey, I’m not hopeless.” Grumbled Mica, turning back to the engine.
“Sure buddy.” John patted him on the back and then knocked on the van doors, “I’m cooking rabbit stew, anyone want in?”
“How much rabbit are we talking?” Called Jane, not looking up from her book.
Sid and Harley, distracted from their fight, pulled open the van door to look at John- their eyes gravitating towards his hand which was holding up the rabbit. Their faces dropped in disappointment.
“It’s only one rabbit? Couldn’t you have caught more John?” Harley sighed.
“And it’s so tiny, how exactly would you make enough stew for all of us?” Added Sid.
“Just one rabbit huh?” Jane clicked her tongue in the back, still reading.
“Well hey, I don’t see any of you lot going out and hunting for food.” John was not impressed.
“Hey everyone calm down, we’re trying to work here!” Yelled Monica from the front of the car, “You know so we can continue our road trip.”
“Whatever.” Called the others in reply.
Softly and to himself Mica grumbled, “take the whole pack on a road-trip, it’ll be fun, you’ll bond. Yeah right, at this rate we’re all just going to kill each other.”
