Persephone sighed, leaning against the pomegranate tree. She longed for the sun, for the warmth of the earth and for the gentle caress of the wind… she longed for something, anything to do in this stagnant underworld.
It pained Hades to watch her and the forlorn expression open her face nearly broke his heart. But it was too late to undo what had been done; it was too late to keep her from eating the seeds. He loved her so deeply and yet he could not approach her, not after binding her free spirit to this place- what he would do if she would just smile once more.
One day the idea came to him, to take her to the entrance. Thanatos ferried them across the river and whilst Persephone had objected at first she had eventually come. When they reached the shore Hades extended his hand, trembling slightly as he wondered if she would accept it.
Her hand grasped his and he smiled.
“What are we here for?” Persephone knew it wasn’t to leave the underworld, the contract Zeus drew up had been very clear.
“I thought you might like to see the Hellhounds? There are some pups at the moment, I thought one might help cheer you up.” He said, leading her to the litter and much to his relief she smiled.
