Saturday Word of the Day: Colophon

*Colophon: a publisher’s or printer’s distinctive emblem, used as an identifying device on its books and other works.

I’ve always been partial to the Penguin publisher’s colophon, that little penguin in the oval has always been a good sign for me. It’s that colophon that marks most of my classical works, of course a few of my other works carry another little bird for a colophon that shouldn’t be mistaken for the Penguin. Yes right amongst my Penguin books there’s also the Puffin colophon, that sideways facing bird. Though truly I feel a bookshelf should also have a variety of colophons, yes familiar colophons can summon nostalgia but strange, unique, rarely seen colophons can often be the mark of a true gem.
